Our efforts at RCFWOI is geared towards the alleviation of the problems of the people aptly describe by Mohammed Yunis in his Autobiography, ‘Banker to the Poor’, who says that “Anybody who is jobless, homeless, illiterate, landless, who does not produce enough food to feed his/her family all year-round, a person with a thatched house that lets in rain, a person suffering from a malnutrition, a person who owns less than twenty five acres of land is a poor person, male or female”. The Royal Charity agrees and affirms that, “that man or woman is in poverty and needs empowerment.
The above definition applies to most “Widows” in Africa and Nigeria in particular. Widows have over the years, by no fault of theirs, found themselves at the receiving end of various dehumanizing cultures and customs. They are therefore classified as poverty-reddened members of our society, with little or no hope of living. Widows are mostly illiterate and do not know their right, so impoverish that they cannot fight for their right. Their sole source of livelihood was the deceased husband. Socially, some of them resort to vices that disrupt the peace of the society. Their children are equally neglected, abused and are societal misfits.
Considering the above stated definition of the term ‘poverty’ and bearing in mind the injunction of the Almighty God in all religions “that pure human beings must seek to care for poor in their afflictions”, it is pertinent therefore, that love and compassion must be the basis of human endeavors on earth.
It is with the aim to dignify the widows and their children that the Royal Charity for Widows and Orphans Initiative was born. The Royal Charity for Widows and orphans Initiative formally known as Royal Ladies Club was founded in Feb, 1999 by EVANG. (MRS.) ELIZABETH OJUROMU DORTIE, B.A.EDUC (ENG), DIP BIBLE THEO, and also a trained Professional Secretary. Together with fifteen (15) other like-minded professional women in the year 2000, the NGO was formerly inaugurated. It has since been registered with the corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja, Nigeria.
